5 Tips on What Not to Do with Your Hair

A good cosmetologist should know what is happening in the beauty industry. They should know what styles and trends are in, what good practices are, and they definitely should know what not to do. At Xenon Academy, we do our best to make sure our students learn everything they need to know to be successful cosmetologists. As an example, here are some things that commonly hurt hair that should be avoided:
woman blow-drying hair

Heat

One of the top things that damage hair is excessive exposure to heat. Hot showers, blow-dryers, hair straighteners, and summer heat are just a few of the things that hair is exposed to on a regular basis. Too much of these things can cause some serious problems! The obvious solution is to apply less heat to your luscious locks, and it’s easier than you think. Don’t use the straightener or blow-dryers as often. Take a lukewarm shower instead of a hot one. Wear a sun hat a couple times a week during the summer. Doing these kinds of things can really help keep your hair silky and smooth.
hair care products

Shampoo

That’s the stuff that is supposed to help your hair be more healthy though, right? Yes and no. Shampooing your hair too much can strip it of healthy natural oils, but shampooing it too little can make those oils too thick and cause your hair to attract dirt and other damaging elements. Getting the balance of oil in your hair just right can be a challenge, and often depends largely on your type of hair. You can also use a boar bristle brush which will help pull the oils away from the scalp without having to shampoo excessively. Experiment a little bit and do some research to find out exactly how much you should shampoo your hair to keep a perfect texture.
brushing wet hair

Brushing

Doing this right when you get out of the shower when your hair is still wet can run a muck on your mane. When your hair is wet it is very elastic and weak. Running a brush through it can cause your hair to stretch and break and when it dries you will be wondering why it feels so brittle and frizzy. To avoid this, run a wide tooth comb through it while you have conditioner in it to remove any knots or tangles.
woman with colorful hair

Color

Dying your hair too often can cause some pretty bad damage to your hair strands. This doesn’t mean to never add color to your hair. If you are coloring your hair every four to six weeks, you should be in good shape. However, if you find yourself needing it more often than that it could be one of the factors that is making your hair frizzy and unmanageable. To help make your color last, use a shampoo and conditioner that are made for dyed hair. Water with fewer chemicals can help your color last longer as well. Using soft water or a shower head with a filter on it is a great way to go! Doing a few things like this to make your color last longer will help you keep healthier hair in the long run.
woman drying her hair with towel

Towel Drying

Drying your hair with a towel can cause some damage, believe it or not. It’s not the worst thing you could do to your mane, but try using some different techniques, like air drying a few times a week and only resort to the towel if you need it. If you are going to use a towel, just dab your hair with it.
